Trying to find the perfect electric bike can seem a bit daunting. There are so many options, specifications and features to consider. Probably the best recommendation we can make is to test ride as many different electric bikes as you can. Test rides are much more valuable than discussing potentially confusing specs, and a great way to help you understand what you prefer. Nevertheless, this article briefly outlines the 7 key aspects of electric bikes and what to look out for.
#1. Support and warranties. An electric bike is a great investment and we believe that buying one from a reputable local bike store is a very wise decision. That way you'll have access to any help, advice or after-sales service you might need.
Similarly, we think it's a good idea to buy an established brand. Not only is the quality likely to be much more consistent, but they are also much more likely to be able to supply spare parts for years to come. We receive almost daily inquiries from customers with a "brand X" electric bike looking for a replacement battery, controller, etc. after the brand has disappeared. Many brands have popped up and then disappeared after selling the first container or two and making money. As with most things, you get what you pay for!
#2. BatteriesThe battery is typically more than a third of the value of a
battery scooty in chennai, so it is obviously a key component to consider. The most important factor is the quality of the battery cells and, as noted above, this is usually reflected in the warranty offered by the manufacturer. Obviously, you will have more confidence in a battery with a two-year warranty than one with a six-month warranty.
#3. ComfortIf you're not comfortable on your bike, you're much less likely to ride it! Two things to consider are: how upright the riding style is; and classic frames versus step-through frames. More traditional road or mountain bikes have the rider leaning quite far forward. Many people are more comfortable with an upright riding style, as found on cruiser bikes and a number of "commuter" bikes. The only way to know which riding style suits you best is to try the bike. Small changes in bike geometry can make a big difference.
#4. EnginesThere are so many variables with engines that it is impractical to go into detail in this article. After all, the only way to test the performance and "feel" of an engine is to ride the bike. If possible, try to do a test that reflects the type of riding you are likely to do on a daily basis. If you live in an area with hills, find a steep hill to test the bike. If you live in a flat area, it doesn't matter so much how much torque you get up hills. Overall quality and reliability are probably the most important factors for an engine, rather than engine style. Again, ask about warranties and do some research on the internet about the brand.
#5. RangeRange is probably the most common question we get asked about bikes - how far will you go on a single battery charge? The answer is always: it depends! There are many factors that affect a bike's range, such as how often you stop and start (an important factor), hills, rider weight, tire pressure, temperature, wind, and how hard you pedal. In short, be wary of the range values given by manufacturers. Or at least find out the exact details of the route to which the range refers. After testing our bikes, we know that the range of a single bike can vary from about 30 km to more than 100 km depending on riding conditions.
#6. SafetyIf you are buying an electric bike from an established brand, chances are that it has been tested to meet your country's safety standards. If not, keep that in mind. A good indicator might be whether the bike's components are from established brands (e.g., Shimano, Avid, Sram, etc.) or unknown brands. If in doubt, ask the seller if the bike is safety certified. (And don't forget to always wear a helmet when riding your electric bike).
#7. WeightThere aren't many really light electric bikes, and those that are available tend to sacrifice power and range. This is likely to change as battery technology improves. Currently, full-size electric bikes weigh between 22 and 25 kg, including the weight of the battery and motor. If weight is a concern, you may want to consider a smaller style of electric bike such as a folding bike.
