Minnesota Vikings Tickets: Franchise Overview

The Minnesota Vikings became an NFL franchise in 1961. As an expansion squad, it took years for the club to become a solid team. After recording just one winning year from 1961-67, Minnesota became an elite club over the next 11 years.

Under the direction of head coach Bud Grant, the Vikings missed the playoffs on only one occasion from 1968-78. Quarterback Fran Tarkenton, defensive lineman Carl Eller, offensive lineman Ron Yary, defensive lineman Alan Page and defensive back Paul Krause all enjoyed Hall of Fame careers during this period for the franchise.

In the first half of the eighties, the Vikings regressed to just two postseason trips from 1979-86. The 1987 season began another good run for Minnesota. From 1987-2000, the Vikings made 11 playoff appearances, with just one losing year.

Super Bowl Seasons

Minnesota became the first franchise to reach four Super Bowls. The Vikings made its first Super Bowl trip in 1969. In the last game before the AFL-NFL merger, Minnesota was upset in Super Bowl IV by the upstart Kansas City Chiefs. From 1973-76, the Vikings dominated the NFC with three championships.

Unfortunately for Minnesota, the club was unable to cash in on its trips to the big game. In 1973, the Vikings lost to the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VIII. In the following season, Pittsburgh began its run of four Super Bowl wins in the decade, with a 16-6 win over Minnesota in Super Bowl IX. In 1976, the Vikings were overwhelmed by the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XI.
