As far as I can see, the mystery behind Alton's lasagna is the expansion of a little sugar to the sauce and utilizing somewhat more cheddar than most other recipes.
There are a couple of minor changes to his unique recipe that I saw as essential, for instance adding a sprinkle of wine vinegar to the sauce and changing how much Parmesan cheddar.
