Все мы читали книжку Александра Дюма «Граф Монте-Кристо», а те кто не читали,наверняка смотрели фильм, где в главной роли снимается Жан Марэ. Или многочисленные вариации на эту тему.  Но ведь у графа Монте-Кристо был реальный прототип. И жизнь, как это всегда бывает, оказывается суровее и прозаичнее, чем описывается в романах.
Итак, история, которая легла в основу романа А. Дюма, произошла в Париже в 1807 году. Франсуа Пико был всего лишь молодым сапожником, однако невеста его, давшая согласие выйти за него замуж – Маргарет Фижеру, была и красива и богата. На свою беду пико заглянул в кабачок к своему приятелю Матье Лупиану. Как часто бывает, тот был иного мнения по поводу этого будущего брака, поскольку сам был тайно влюблен в Маргарет и вдруг она выходит замуж за какого-то сапожника! Он посчитал возможным исправить причуды судьбы с помощью доноса, к которому и привлек своих приятелей:  Аллю, Шобро и Соляри. Вместе они состряпали донос, в котором утверждали, что Пико – английский шпион и сторонник возвращения Бурбонов.  Полицейский комиссар доложил министру полиции и Пико арестовали и поместили в крепость Фенестрель в Пьемонте. Однако ни родителям, ни невесте не сообщили об аресте Пико. Был человек, и нету. Через 7 лет Бурбоны вернулись на трон. Пико выпустили на свободу. За это время он изменился внешне, состарился, помрачнел. Но в крепости один итальянский священник завещал ему перед смертью все свое состояние: восемь миллионов франков, вложенных в имущество, два миллиона в драгоценностях и три миллиона золота. Поэтому первым делом, выйдя из тюрьмы, Пико разыскал эти сокровища и стал богатым человеком.
Следующим шагом стала месть. Под чужим именем он поселяется в квартале, где когда-то жил, и начинает свое расследование. Он узнает, что маргарет через два года вышла замуж за кабатчика Лупиана, из-за которого и произошли все неприятности Пико. Она родила двоих детей, а ее муж стал владельцем шикарнейшего парижского ресторана. Пико, переодевшись монахом, едет к Антуану Аллю, одному из участников сочинения доноса. Тот владел захудалым трактиром и был обрадован, когда монах предложил ему большой бриллиант в обмен на информацию. Мол, этот бриллиант Пико перед смертью завещал передать тому, кто расскажет всю правду. Аллю назвал всех участников сговора и получил бриллиант. Камень он продал. На деньги купил роскошную виллу. Но после, посчитав, что ювелир его обманул, убил его,  и скрылся.
Пико возвращается в Париж и устраивается в ресторан другого сообщника – Лупиана простым официантом под именем Просперо. В этом же ресторане он застал и двух других сообщников: Шобро и Соляри.  Труп Шобро скоро находят на мосту с кинжалом в груди. На рукоятке кинжала вырезано: «номер первый». И у Лупиана начинаются проблемы. Его дочь от первого брака, которой было 16 лет совращает граф Корлано. Но граф, конечно же, готов жениться. Готовится свадьба, но за праздничный стол граф не явился. Напротив, из Испании пришла телеграмма, что он не граф, а беглый каторжник. Кроме этого, пожар уничтожает дотла и дом и ресторан Лупиана. А его сын оказывается втянут в сомнительную компанию и получает 20 лет каторги по приговору суда.
Соляри неожиданно умирает с симптомами отравления. К его гробу кто-то прикрепляет записку: «номер второй».
У Лупиана новая катастрофа: от отчаяния умирает жена, та самая Маргарет. А официант Просперо предлагает купить дочь Лупиана Терезу себе в любовницы. Так Пико становится любовником дочери Лупиана.
И однажды перед Лупианом возникает фигура в черной маске и говорит: «Я Франсуа Пико. Я убил Шобро и Соляри, обесчестил твою дочь и опозорил сына, поджег твой дом и довел до могилы твою жену. Теперь твой черед – ты «номер третий». Он убивает Лупиана. Но убежать Пико не удается. Кто-то набрасывается на него и связывает. Этим человеком оказался Антуан Аллю. Он давно заподозрил Пико и следил за ним. Теперь он хочет половину состояния Пико. Но то упорно отказывается. Тогда Аллю в припадке бешенства убивает его и бежит в Англию. И уже там, через несколько лет, умирая, он исповедуется священнику и просит, чтобы его исповедь передали французской полиции.
Так что, в реальности граф Монте-Кристо не пожалел никого. Впрочем, не пожалели и его. И тот самый трактирщик, который в романе Дюма погибает первым, оказался самым живучим. Жизнь все-таки отличается от романов.
